Disciples Were Not Schizophrenic

Well, as usual, I am reluctant to write this one- and let me preface by saying, if you are, or love, or know someone with schizophrenia, this is in no way meant as an offence to you. I, too, share such a diagnosis. (Well, technically, schizoaffective-but same difference).

I have heard something like this on numerous occasions, by numerous people. “How do you know, all of the disciples were not just mentally ill?”

Well, I do not. I do not think they were. In my experience, the things that the disciples did and experienced were not something I could have done when my illness was at its worst.

But to say that- to say Jesus is a figment of one’s imagination, would have to be implying that He has no power. And when you have experienced the power of God, the love of Jesus, the forgiveness of a merciful God on your life, well, while some do have doubts at times, at this point, there is just no denying it.

God has shown up, time and time again. God has provided a husband when asked. God has provided financially when asked. God has given peace when asked. God works on me every day.

To suggest that God is for only the mentally ill- well, that suggestion could be met with disdain. It also segregates those who truly need a saviour. The mentally ill are not always broken-hearted, but they are also not the only ones who can be broken-hearted. I truly believe God is closest to the broken-hearted.

Therefore, God is not only for people with a mental illness. God is not only for people who do not have a mental illness. God is for everyone.

If you are struggling to figure out the answer to this question, or the many others we as humans have surrounding faith, God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, well, why don’t you ask Him?

And open a Bible- see what He says to you.

Give it a shot, see where it takes you. Oh, where could the possibilities take you?

God is for you, and if you live with schizophrenia, that does not change that. But if you don’t live with schizophrenia, God is for you, too.

May God reveal Himself to you, may He show up in your life in ways you could never think or imagine. May you realize what is available to you.

God bless.
